Suspected Vandal Targets Matinicus Lobsterman

By Stephen Betts

Matinicus Island — The Knox County Sheriff's Office is investigating two vandalism incidents that targeted the 68-year-old Matinicus man acquitted last month of shooting another lobsterman.

Shortly after arriving back on the island following his March 12 acquittal, Edwin Vance Bunker had the tires on his pickup truck cut, Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison said.

Then on April 6, his truck was spray painted while at the island's air strip, the sheriff said.
There is a suspect, Dennison said. Detective Reginald Walker is investigating the case.

Bunker and his daughter Janan Miller were found not guilty by a jury in connection with the events surrounding the July 2009 shooting of Christopher Young. The shooting followed escalating tensions over territorial disputes and lobstering.

Young and Weston Ames have filed civil lawsuits against Bunker and Miller. Those are pending in court.
